Mononoke the Movie: Chapter II – The Ashes of Rage (2025): The Medicine Seller Returns to Face a Fire-Consumed Curse

After the chilling events of Phantom of the Opera, the Medicine Seller returns with more haunting mysteries and beautifully unnerving tales in Mononoke the Movie: Chapter II – The Ashes of Rage. Releasing August 14, 2025, exclusively on Netflix, this second installment in the Mononoke movie trilogy dives even deeper into the politics, pain, and paranormal secrets of the Ōoku—the inner chambers of the imperial palace.

🔥 Fire, Betrayal, and a Mother's Vengeance

One month has passed since the events of the first film, and the scars of that haunting encounter have yet to heal. The mysterious Medicine Seller (voiced once again by Hiroshi Kamiya) reappears in the Ōoku, where noblewoman Botan Ōtomo (Haruka Tomatsu) has taken over leadership with a stern hand. But her rise to power doesn't go unchallenged.

As tensions rise between Botan and Fuki (Yoko Hikasa), a revered courtesan once favored by the emperor, things spiral out of control when Fuki delivers an “unwanted child.” Seen as a threat by Elder Ōtomo (Kenyu Horiuchi), Fuki becomes entangled in a political web, and soon, the inner palace is consumed by inexplicable phenomena.

People begin to spontaneously combust, leaving nothing but ashes behind. The Medicine Seller believes it’s the work of a

Mononoke—a vengeful spirit. This one, he suspects, is tied to the Hinezumi, or fire mouse—a supernatural being seeking justice for the harm done to newborns.

But this Mononoke doesn’t act alone.

🐭 The Mononoke Are Multiplying

Unlike previous cases, this Mononoke is supported by the children of Hinezumi, who appear in flickers of flame and ghostly apparitions. They aren’t here to destroy—at least not blindly. They’re searching for their mother, and their cries for justice scorch every corner of the palace.

In the face of imperial pride, patriarchal schemes, and buried guilt, the Medicine Seller must uncover the Form, Truth, and Reason of this Mononoke. Only then can he bring the curse to an end.

“If you wish to cut a Mononoke, first understand it. Without that, the blade is meaningless.”

🎭 A Haunting Cast and Masterful Direction

Directed by Kiyotaka Suzuki and supervised by Kenji Nakamura, The Ashes of Rage brings back the distinctive style that made Mononoke a cult classic. The animation remains bold and experimental, rooted in traditional Japanese art with modern digital layers—creating a uniquely immersive horror-fantasy experience.

Voice Cast Highlights:

  • Hiroshi Kamiya as the enigmatic Medicine Seller

  • Haruka Tomatsu as the authoritative Botan Ōtomo

  • Yoko Hikasa as the wounded but resilient Fuki Tokita

  • Atsumi Tanezaki, Yuki Kaji, Yoshiko Sakakibara, and Kenyu Horiuchi join an already rich ensemble
