The Diplomat: Season 3 — Power, Paranoia, and Political Chess Returns This Fall

Starring Keri Russell, Rufus Sewell, Allison Janney, and Bradley Whitford. Coming Fall 2025. Only on Netflix

The game of international diplomacy has just become a lot more perilous.

After two seasons of twists, betrayals, and razor-sharp political maneuvering, The Diplomat returns this fall with a third season that promises to flip the chessboard entirely. Created by Debora Cahn (Homeland, The West Wing), this award-winning political thriller is stepping up the stakes — with new faces, a dead president, and one of the most unpredictable power plays yet.

🌍 What to Expect in Season 3

When we last left Kate Wyler (Keri Russell), the seasoned diplomat had just accused then-Vice President Grace Penn (Allison Janney) of masterminding a terrorist attack — and admitted she wanted Penn’s job. Seconds later, President Rayburn dropped dead under suspicious circumstances
and Grace became the new Commander-in-Chief.

Now, in Season 3, Kate must reckon with the nightmare of getting exactly what she wanted — and facing the consequences. As she’s drawn into the brutal political vacuum left behind, her personal and professional life spiral deeper into disarray. Her husband, Hal (Rufus Sewell), may have played a role in the President’s death. Her alliance with British Foreign Secretary Austin Dennison (David Gyasi) grows murkier. And she finds herself entangled in a strange, possibly manipulative bond with First Gentleman Todd Penn, played by the ever-brilliant Bradley Whitford (The West Wing, The Handmaid’s Tale).

“Season 3 flips the chessboard,” says creator Debora Cahn.“Kate lives the particular nightmare that is getting what you want.”

🧹 Where We Left Off: A Season 2 Recap

Season 2 peeled back layers of political corruption, revealing that the attack on a British naval ship — previously thought to be foreign terrorism, was orchestrated within the UK government. Even more stunning, Vice President Grace Penn had her hands all over it.

The motive? Keep Scotland from gaining independence, which would shutter Creegan, a key nuclear base for both the US and UK. When Kate’s husband Hal bypasses diplomatic channels and calls President Rayburn directly with the news
the President dies. Coincidence? The characters — and viewers — aren’t so sure.
